Why Meditate?
by Swami Nischalananda
In the present technological era, there is an almost obsessive tendency for human endeavour to be completely concerned with and absorbed in outside activities. Everything in society is orientated towards the external. Our education is such that it only commends outer success, whether in work, business or play. We are encouraged, even obliged, to be incessantly busy.
The result is imbalance in our lives. We have no idea what is going on inside us and where we are going on our life's journey. We tend to become intellectual giants but emotional pygmies. This is one of the main reasons why amidst an ocean of material plenty there is so much mental turmoil and dissatisfaction.
One of the purposes of meditation is to rectify this imbalance, so that whilst continuing our daily life and duties we also start to delve into Reality. To grow and evolve as humans we have to understand the hidden aspects of our Nature.
If there is a missing factor in your life- if you feel that, despite having everything, there is an inner void- then meditation could be the key to opening up new dimensions of creativity, meaning and joy in your life.
