Permaculture

Permaculture (permanent agriculture or permanent culture) is a successful approach to designing sustainable environments which have the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems, whilst also providing for the needs of the people who use them. It is based on the philosophy of co-operating with nature and caring for the earth and its people.

Permaculture enables us to establish productive environments which provide our:

  Food

  Energy

  Shelter

  Material and non-material needs

The ethics, principles and practice of permaculture can be used by anyone, anywhere: in city flats, yards and window boxes; suburban and country houses and gardens; allotments and small holdings; on farms and estates; countryside and conservation areas; commercial, industrial and educational premises and, of course on waste ground.

Put into practice, permaculture empowers the individual to be resourceful and self reliant, and to become a conscious part of the solution to the many problems which face us, both locally and globally.

Founded in Australia, permaculture is rapidly spreading throughout the world. There are now many experienced permaculture designers, teachers and authors in Britain and many active projects which are a testament to the application of its principles.

There are practical solutions to our environmental problems. We are not powerless individuals. The philosophy and practice of permaculture empowers everyone, whether we have land or not, to make significant, life affirming changes and to become a conscious part of the solution.

Find your place on the planet, dig in and take responsibility from there. Gary Snyder
